Tahir Walsh qualifies for double
Spearheading the St. Joseph's Academy, Tahir Walsh, son of the late cricketer Hayden Walsh, sped to qualifying times in the 100m and 200m for the CARIFTA Games to be held in the Cayman Islands, April 2-5, 2010. Walsh ran a time of 10.78 in the 100m and 22.04 in the 200m during the Interschool Athletic Championships at YASCO, March 6-7, 2010.
However, despite outstanding performances from other Wings athletes, Jalil Salmon, Al Antonio for St. Joseph's Academy and Alisha Thomas and Meuset Jeffers of Christ the King High School, both schools were clipped into 2nd place by a sxty odd Princess Margaret School contingent. Salmon who is close to qualifying time in the 400m will again try to make the Antigua Track team during the weekly ABAA Development Meets.
Both St. Joseph's Academy and Christ the King High School had dominated Track & Field up until 2008. St. Joseph's Academy has won at least seven championships in the male category, while Christ the King has succeeded in 14 championships of which 13 being consecutive, before being beaten into 2nd place in 2007 and joint winnders with PMS in 2008. PMS recaptured the title in 2009.
It will be interesting to see the rivalry among Antiguan and overseas athletes as they compete for their respective clubs in the 2nd Annual Sir Reginald Samuel Track & Field Classic, scheduled for May 1-2, 2010.
