Sports Ministry acquires school Buses
As part of its efforts to increase participation in sports, especially by young women, and from athletes in the rural areas, who have transportation difficulties, the Ministry of Sports has now acquired two buses.
The Ministry of Sports has been under tremendous criticism, over several years, for the unavailability of its own transportation to support its schools sports programs and potential national athletes handicapped by transportation to and from training sessions.
The Ministry of Sports became faced with the problem when the School Bus System was removed from the Ministry of Education & Sports and put in the hands of the Antigua/Barbuda Transport Board, thus incurring a high cost when needed.
The new buses were refurbished by the Board of Education following a request by the Minister of Sports, Sen. Winston Williams. Although the use of the buses was officially launched on Tuesday, June 19, during the Opening Ceremony of the Edu-Sports Camp at the JSC Sports Complex, the buses will go into full operation in September, at the start of the new school year.
According to Planning Officer in the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Anne Jonas, the term & conditions of use will be circulated to all schools and sports associations, shortly.
