Row row row your boat...gently 'cross the Atlantic
Ok, raise your hands who would like to row across the Atlantic Ocean? You know, the one at our doorstep and approx. 2,500 miles to the nearest island? Well, even if sitting on your bum for up to three months in open water doesn’t appeal to you, there are many others who have already put their oars in.
Needless to say, The Atlantic Rowing Race 2009, which originated in the Canary Islands off Africa's West Coast, is not for the faint of heart. Dealing with the searing hot sun is the least of your worries as you careen through shark-infested waters and potential bad weather. And you better kiss your loved ones a lot before you go, because it will be their smiling faces that keep you going lo those many leagues over the sea.
Teams from across Europe (Britain, Denmark, France, Ireland) and stateside (USA) set sail January 4th and are expected to be at sea for about one to three months give or take a sunburn or two. The youngest competitor is 18-year old James Beech from the UK, while up the scale a few years at 61, is Dane Ole Elmer. There's couples, singles, (mostly) men and a few females giving it a go, some raising money for various charities at the same time.
