Peace Corps volunteer Mike Rodriguez runs drills with former football team
Former USA Peace Corp Volunteer, Mike Rodriguez of Chicago, Illinois, is once
again in Antigua. However, this time, the versatile sportsman is on a two-week vacation. “I have such good memories of Antigua, and made so many friends and contacts, that I just had to return. Antigua is like my second home,” said Rodriguez.
As a Peace Corp Volunteer from 2007-2009, Rodriguez worked with the Gilbert’s
Agricultural & Rural Development Centre in Business and ICT development. In his spare time, Rodriguez participated in football, playing for the Seatons/Glanville
FC and at times helped with the coaching. He also did a few coaching stints with the 5P’s FC. “I went back to see some of the guys in Seatons, and they are not doing too well in the FA League, at the moment. I wish I could help them,” said Rodriguez.
Besides football, Rodriguez was and still is an ardent lover of distance running, swimming and cycling and has participated in triathlon and other meets put on by the various Antiguan associations.
Rodriguez came in contact with the CPTSA during his two-year work in Antigua, participating in several of the Club’s Road Relays. He has become an ardent fan of the Wings Sports Club. On his vacation, besides participating in the Hash Harriers’ running events, and training with some of the Digicel Jonathan Rohr Memorial Tinman athletes, Rodriguez has been delighted to work alongside Coach Ijahba Codrington with the Wings Youth Football program. “The kids were wonderful and very coachable,” he said after practice.
