International athlete takes time out to teach the youngsters
The Digicel Jonathan Rohr Memorial Tinman has this week been giving back to the community through the efforts of Argentinean professional triathlete and coach Claudio Delpueche. The 40-year-old accomplished triathlete, who has raced in over 400 triathlons across the world, has been running a series of clinics for the nation’s children in triathlon, running and swimming.
Delpueche came on island early last week for the upcoming half-iron distance triathlon and has been spending his time with swim clubs, running clubs and schools. On Saturday, Delpueche visited the Dolphins Swim Club and Marlins Swim Club at Fryes Beach and Buccaneer Beach to talk about the life of a professional triathlete and help the children with swimming techniques. During the week Delpueche held talks at the CCSET International Academy and held running sessions with the Pioneers and Hurricane Power running clubs.
In the coming week Delpueche hopes to speak at one or two more schools, meet with some more swimming clubs and run a clinic in Barbuda before getting focussed to compete in the triathlon on next week at the Catamaran Hotel. Delpueche is also spending his time on island coaching the nation’s top triathletes and developing a programme to take Antigua and Barbuda’s athletes to the Pan American Games.
This Friday, Delpueche will also take part in a Swim with the Pros Day organized by the Antigua Athletic Club and its home team STORM (Antigua Aquatic Club). That day will be held by AAC free of charge beginning at 4pm for interested swimmers and will be led by the ‘fastest swimmer in triathlon’ Benjamin “Benji” Sanson. Sanson will also be on island for the Tinman. Interested swimmers should contact Antigua Athletic Club at 460-CLUB (2582).
