Oil Spill Investigated
An oil spill/dump was spotted of the shore of Crabb's Peninsula on Monday August 16th, 2010 and was documented in photographs. Not fully satisfied with the answers we received from the Antigua Power Company (APC), the coverage by local media or the responsibility taken by the various government departments, members of the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) decided to do an independent investigation.
On Saturday August 21st, Robby Breadner (myself) and Eli Fuller spent the afternoon combing the shoreline to find what the Antiguan Coast Guard said they could not: evidence that an oil leak took place. It was found... and more. Further photography was taken which can be viewed by the link at the bottom of this article.
Eli Fuller wrote a thorough and informative column on the subject and our findings, in his regular blog which is a must-read: Antigua's 366th beach is an ignored government toxic waste dump.
Hopefully, light shed on this subject will get the attention of the Antiguan government, inciting the appropriate governmental bodies to act and stop these eco crimes. Dumping or spilling hazard and toxic chemical into Antigua's waters has been taking place for years and is part of the reason Antigua's coral reefs and marine life are dying. It is illegal and full prosecutable, under Antiguan law.
