Lookout Point: A MOMENT in NATURE
March's MOMENTS in NATURE hike started at Lookout Point with a healthy incline through tropical flora and rewarded the hikers with a superb view of English Harbour. After a brief rest and opportunity to photograph the gorgeous morning, everyone head to the south coast, past Shirley Heights and toward Carpenter's Rock. The terrain downward is very dramatic but the only dangers were the sharp and incredibly strong cacti that managed to puncture some folks' footwear.
Once everyone arrived at the ocean, the youngest explored the tidal pools at Carpenter's Rock. An octopus was discovered under a large rock and sure enough, when hike leader Robby Breadner reached under the rock, the octopus grabbed his fingers and attempted to pull him under. Fortunately the octopus' estimated size was smaller than an orange. Meanwhile EAG member, Cap distributed several plastic bags for hikers to casually scour the wilderness and pick up tossed garbage. Several bags were collected.
Upon arrival at Galleon Beach, the youngest of the group jumped into their swimwear and enjoyed a much deserved cooling off, while others rehydrated on the patio and beach.
Soon enough, everyone had gathered at the Slipway where they continued on the final leg of the hike. Upon arrival at Clarence House, they were greeted by the Tot Club busy reconditioning the historic Clarence House. Hard at work they explained their task at hand and shared the improvements being made to the building.
This hike was the third in the MOMENTS in NATURE series and was an excellent mix of vistas, flora, marine, photography tips, beach and history.
MOMENTS in NATURE hikes happen on the last Sunday of every month and are an excellent way to discover the beauty of Antigua, learn about cameras, get some exercise and make new friends. You are invited to explore Antigua on the next MOMENTS in NATURE hike. Check 365antigua.com or EAGantigua.org for details of the next in the series.
