Christmas in Antiguan 2007
It was a Christmas celebration taking place at Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour. so we figured we would fit it into our december 25th activities. Once we had enjoyed a wonderful brunch at the Edwards', we journeyed down to Nelson's Dockyard to check out the activities. When we arrived, things were just getting going. It was a champagne Christmas fundraiser with proceeds from champagne sales going to a local charity. a dinghy full of bottles of champagne in ice was surrounded by a tent with a band, a bar & a food concession. so we were set up.
Picture the scene...
Nelson's Dockyard is a restored naval yard with buildings, boats & plenty of history. Initially built in 1725 & restored in 1951, this site is a fantastic collection of vintage structures and beautiful modern-day sailboats. There is no shortage of things to see and explore for little boys and big ones.
Soon friends of all kinds began to arrive at Nelson's Dockyard. Fortunately, we arrived early and scooped a shady tree. Ché and Willow instantly connected with the many, many other children while they climbed trees, ran around and played musical blankets.
The vibe was as positive as it gets. It was a lollapolooza festival with kiddles. No matter which way you turned friendly people were there to chat and share a glass of champagne. all parents looked out for all children. It was a combination of residents and visiting tourists. From six months to 85 years old, people enjoyed the music, bevvies, foods and each other, all day.
We never made it to the beach. Each time we considered it, more friends arrived, showed up with hugs, best wishes and lots of conversation.
The day concluded for us as dusk began to set. As the champagne, hot sun and activities started to take their toll, we noticed the families were calling it a day; being replaced by local teens who were ready to pick up where we left off. No doubt the celebrations went well into the night.
