One of the longest running reggae bands, formed in 1973 by Guitarist, Cellist and Singer Stephen 'Cat' Coore, Third World opened for the Jackson Five at the Jamaican National Stadium in 1974. In 1975 they were playing in the UK where Island Records' Chris Blackwell saw them perform. Blackwell immediately offered them a record deal and a slot on a European tour, opening for one of his artistes, Bob Marley and The Wailers and the rest, as they say is history.
Their 23rd album, Patriots, which was released on Jan 25, 2011, has been featured on CNN, Billboard charts, Billboard Biz, NY1, Jamaica Observer and The Gleaner, among others. Executive Produced by Third World Music Group and co-produced by Dean Pond of Rymshot Productions, the album features artists such as the late Gregory Isaacs, Marcia Griffiths, Tessanne Chin, Capleton, Stephen and Damian Marley. Patriots also features, Toots Hibbert, Sly Dumbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Dean Frazier, Tarrus Riley, Inner Circle, Mykal Rose, Jessica Yapp (on violin) and Junior Reid.
Third World has long been a favourite in Antigua and they headlined during Antigua Sailing Week 2010 at Shirley Heights, where they had the crowd jamming into the night. Not only is having reggae ambassadors Third World an exciting addition to this year’s Fest but Lashings World XI – Richie’s old team from the UK – will be flying in to play an Exhibition Match against the Antigua National Team and provide some coaching sessions for up and coming schools players.
“Richie said last year that his dream was to create a Fest that combined cricket and music. Thanks to sponsorship from the Ministry of Tourism, Intertops and others we have been able to do exactly that this year. Our Cricket Fest is an international 20/20 Masters Tournament with teams flying in from the USA, Canada, Barbados and St Croix to compete alongside Antigua Masters and to be able to add reggae legends Third World to the mix is just perfect” remarks Tracy Guerrero of Indigo Event Services.
