Take it with a grain of "Salt"
Who's in it? Angelina Jolie, some German guy, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor
What's it about? A "did she or didn't she" flick about a CIA operative who may or may not be a Russian spy.
Some movie stars are known for their incredible ability to get lost in a role, to transport the viewer to another world if only for 90 minutes or so. Then there's Angelina Jolie. More famous for the vial of blood, the many adoptions, the charities, the Brad Pitt…it is difficult to remove the person from the persona. Unfortunately, her portrayal of Evelyn Salt is no different.
As you watch the beautifully distracting Jolie jump impossibly onto moving trains, immobilise men double her size with ease, and blow up things real easy like, you can't help wondering about the enigma behind the puzzle. She is just simply hard to fathom as a kick-ass take no prisoners tough guy. The part was supposedly written for a downward spiralling Tom Cruise, so it's no wonder the producers gravitated to another actor with a piercing stare and ability to mow through a crowd like a knife through butter, but in Jolie's case, you just know the CGI department was brought in to help with the heavy lifting.
Salt is captured behind enemy lines in North Korea and rescued by her unassuming husband. An old man dying of cancer shows up at the CIA with an incredible tale that appears to implicate Salt in a dastardly plot involving assassinations of heads of state. The remainder of the film is a cat and mouse chase with a few twists and turns that beggar belief but is kind of a fun ride anyway.
