Moments in Nature - Christian Valley to Mount Obama, 28 Feb 2010
The hike to from Christian Valley to the summit of Mount Obama was an exciting and challenging excursion not without its drama. The first group took a detour due to the initial part of the hike being obscured by the beginnings of a road brutally cut into the mountainside. Two hikers were stung by jack spaniard wasps, one having an allergic reaction. At the top of the mountain overgrown fever grass had obscured parts of the trail making the lookout impossible to locate.
However, the descent gave everyone a gorgeous view of the stunning flora that exists in Antigua. Chris Pratt, EAG board member and co-author of the recently released 'The Wild Plants" brought it out and showed hikers many of the threatened species of plant life along the trail. At the bottom of the mountain, there were many exhausted smiles and a collective sense of satisfaction that we had all conquered Mount Obama.
The next MOMENT in NATURE hike will take place on Sunday 28 March. And although we have not confirmed the specific trail, it was promised that the hike will be near the ocean, through mangroves, relatively flat and end at a beach for a refreshing dip in the ocean. Hope to see you there.
