Meeting Your BF's Family for the First Time?
So you've met the one and now you're all in love. It's your first Holiday Season together and he's invited you to have dinner with his parents or to attend a family social. Eeeek! This first time meeting of the family can be as nerve racking as a job interview. In fact, that is exactly what it will be. They will ask you questions and they will size you up - They want to know if you're the right girl for their son. First impressions with future possible in-laws therefore requires preparation! From the minute they lay their watchful eyes on you, you must be certain that you're sending the right messages. This may sound simple enough, but you'd be surprised how wearing the wrong outfit or even saying the wrong thing can start you off on the wrong foot.
Take this meeting seriously and be tactical and strategic about how you want to be perceived. First off, Do your homework! Find out his family's social type/style. If they are staunch Christians most likely they're conservative. Are they still rather young? Maybe still in their 40's? then maybe they're more Contemporary. Are they very relaxed and outgoing? maybe artsy and eclectic? then maybe they are a more Non-Traditional family. Whatever their social type/style may be always be sure to do your research. Ask your boyfriend and even a sibling what the family is like. You'll need to be as accurate as possible so that you can be prepared to act and dress accordingly. These wardrobe ideas may help you get the ball rolling.
He has Conservative Parents
Keep it cute and simple. A knee length or just above the knee skirt or dress would definitely work as long as it is not too tight. A top with sleeves is usually more appropriate in conservative settings but isn't a must. Just remember no tube tops and bustiers.

He has Contemporary Parents
Feel free to be relaxed and trendy. No matter the social style of his parents you should never go to the event looking like you're going to a club so find your balance by using pieces that will tame down a more sexy type of dress for example pairing a blazer or jacket with a mini dress or adding monotone leggings and booties to a pair of shorts.

He has Sophisticated parents
A distinguished stylish mode of dress is preferred, one that exudes a sense of demure and elegance but still stylish and feminine.

He has Non-traditional/Eclectic parents
You can be artsy and original if you like they probably won't mind. So pull out your geek look if you'd like to, just don't go overboard. If it's a casual affair you can definitely be inspired by the looks below.

It's also a very thoughtful gesture to walk with a small gift. One that is appropriate of course i.e. An item for the home like a scented candle or glassware or a practical kitchen item, a bottle of wine or apple cider are all small gestures that can leave a lasting impression.
Now that you've got "the look" and the gift down, remember to be on your best behavior. Smile with everyone and be polite. Let your charming personality shine through. Be helpful and considerate - Help set the table or clear the dishes after dinner, engage in small talk, ask questions, show that you're interested in learning about his family. Don't be too pushy and too talkative though. Remember everything must be done within balance and temperance and most importantly be yourself and have fun!
