Hike Galleon Beach to Shirley Heights
We had the pleasure of the company of newlyweds Lindsay and Michael from Madison, Wisconson. They joined us on our weekly hike, this time to the southeast corner of the island. We started at the rustic and picturesque Galleon Beach, visited impressive Carpenter's Rock, meandered our way along the rugged windswept coastline and climbed the craggy rocks, while trying - sometimes unsuccessfully - to avoid the abundant cacti, on the way to our final destination, Shirley Heights. There were a few pleasant suprises along the way including our birds eye view of the Antigua Classic Yacht races off in the distance. Oh yes and the dead goats. They were fun too.
This hike is easily done by visitors. We hiked up to Shirley Heights are you can hike down. The trail from Galleon Beach can be found by driving past English Harbour entrance toward Shirley Heights. Turn into the Galleon Beach entrance and drive all the way to the end of Galleon Beach. From there, follow the trail. There is no cover for this hike so be sure to use sunscreen and wear a hat. Make sure you wear sturdy boots or shoes. There are small cactus that will puncture light footwear. Respect the ground flora (cacti and all) and stay on the trail. Bring your camera and plenty of water. Enjoy.
