Seafood Fiesta draws large crowd
The Seafood Fiesta in Urlings last weekend was a chance for the community to welcome lovers of fruits de la mer and other delights. There was some grumbling that the event followed too closely on the heels of the July edition, but judging from the large number of happy faces and stuffed bellies, there was little to complain about. Conch-kebobs, chowder, saltfish fritters, fish stew, steamed crab, shrimp skewers, fried fish and many more seafood dishes were on offer throughout the Urlings fisheries site.
Antigua's chefs are amazingly resourceful, serving up tender morsels, soups and garlic bread from steel BBQ's, roadside grills, and homemade car rims. The atmosphere was fun and playful, especially over at the ubiquitous and very popular bounce castle which was in full hyped-up kiddie mode. Just a note, we have to single out the young lady and lad who ran the BC in such a well-organised and orderly manner. Hats off to you!
Throughout the afternoon, several performers took their turn at the mic, including 2010 Junior Calypso Monarch 13-19, Singing Princess, and Soca Monarch competitor, Elizabrat.
The only downside to these types of large gatherings is the long lineups and lack of seating. We waited 40 minutes, give or take, to chow down on a mouth-watering lobster, that was thankfully worth the wait. And, sitting in the tall grasses under a shade tree may seem romantic for some, but with such a large crowd a few picnic tables would be handy.
Overall, the organizers should be happy with the turnout, which included young and old, families, couples, tourists, and locals alike. An event such as this will definitely be a reminder to all that Antigua and Barbuda is more than just sun, sand and sea.
