The Backyard Restaurant - review
The Ambience
When you hear the word “backyard”, it evokes thoughts of family, fun and a lot of laughter. These three visions come to life at The Backyard Restaurant & Bar nestled in the heart of St. John’s. It is easily missed, whilst driving up or down Sir Vivian Richards St., almost camouflaged with the high galvanize fencing. But as soon as you step into The Backyard you are transformed, by the West Indian music, the simple but inviting setup, and the bar-like atmosphere.
The bar, decked out with various Caribbean national flags and sweet calypso and reggae music emanating from the speakers, makes it’s easy to feel at home. Although only in operation for three years, repeat customers are drawn to the Backyard because of the family atmosphere that surrounds them or for another opportunity to laugh with friends and meet new people.
The Food
The Backyard specialises in local delicacies, staying true to its West Indian theme. Customers may enjoy seafood dishes such as grilled fish, lobster, conch or salt fish fritters, or their special conch cevichѐ (souse without the pork). It is the only dish on the menu that is not truly West Indian but delicious nonetheless. It is well prepared and served with tomatoes, green pepper in a vinegar, and lime base. Owner John Fernandez came across this dish on a trip to Puerto Rico and fell in love with the taste. Additionally, The Backyard serves up delicious rice pudding with just the right amount of spices.
The restaurant and bar currently opens twice a week on Fridays from 5pm to midnight, where heavy meals aren’t served but customers still have a variety of options, such as Jerk pork, shrimp roti or grilled fish. On Saturdays, the restaurant opens from 1 p.m. serving specials such as curry conch or goat with rice and peas or season rice.
The food, according to Fernandez, may be considered a conversational piece whilst adding to the welcoming “Backyard” experience. And if food is not the only thing on your mind then the fully stocked bar is at your disposal with happy hour from 6-8 p.m.
The Owner
John Fernandez was born in Antigua and grew up in Ovals, actually right on Sir Vivian Richards street. Only in operation for three years, the restaurant and bar came into existence after Fernandez started looking for a new venture in life and change of career from family business (i.e. Deluxe Cinemas).
So after clearing off the land adjacent to his home and growing weary of cutting the lawn every month both he and his girlfriend decided to open the restaurant. It seemed like the obvious option, since on weekends they would play host to a number of friends. Word-of-mouth soon spread and good publicity has led to the success of this local favourite.
“We have a lot of friends and family, when I opened we invited them and it mushroomed from there,” Fernandez said. Currently his partner runs the kitchen while he oversees the general business.
