August Rush Productions, in its effort to broaden the appreciation of expressions through the arts, will feature the work of local artiste Sokoto George at 'Poetry in the Pub' on Thursday, January 28th, at O'Grady's Bar (formerly Funky Buddha).
This 23-year-old visual artist fell in love with digital art at the age of 11. Visiting St. Kitts on vacation and meeting a church friend who was working with Adobe Photoshop, George knew that he wanted to master digital software to create the visions in his mind’s eye.
At age 14, he presented his work in his first shared exhibition at the Woods Art Gallery, of which he was a member until its closure last year. Learning to experiment with tones and brushes for different effects from photography artist Ken McGuire and learning to paint with acrylic from artist and writer Gilly Gobinet, George began experimenting with collages and mixing mediums; painting on digitally enhanced printed photos.
Over the years he has become more advanced with digital technology, where software is his brush and the computer, his canvas. It’s through this medium he begins a process where he starts with an empty page, incorporates the photo, and closes his eyes to enter a world beyond his eyes. "When I open my eyes, the task then becomes putting everything together...to unlock this fantasy by using different effects.” Of his work, George hopes that people will feel inspired to realise that they can do more than just what’s in front of them. "I want people to realise that we can push ourselves beyond our expectations."

On the fourth Thursday of every month, a different visual artiste will have his/her work featured and a challenge will be made to the poets and spoken word artistes in the house to create a piece inspired by the featured work of the artiste.
Also on the fourth Thursday, the mic will be open to all spoken word artistes to present work on the theme of the evening. This Thursday’s theme is "New Beginnings" and artistes are welcome to present up to three pieces.
The evening kicks off at 8:30pm at the O’Grady’s Bar on Redcliffe Street and cover is only $5.
For artistes interested in performing on the 28th, sign up in advance by e-mailing augustrush.antigua@gmail.com or call 779-6634 or 783-4120.
