All they want to do is Dance!
Some people are blessed with the gift of dance. They can shake it at a club or wine their waist like Beyonce with little effort. Some people have an added dose however, and finally, in Antigua and Barbuda, a competition has come about that endeavors to present dancers with a genuine challenge.
The Rock Star Dance Competition, which was held at Rush Night Club this past Friday, had four Dance Crews competing for the chance to have the title as Antigua’s Best Dance Crew as well as to win a prize of $5000.00
The competition is expected to go on for three more weeks until there is only one crew left standing.
When 365antigua.com decided to stop by, four crews were still in the running for the glory; Frontside - a quirky, comedic and very talented group, Heartless – a group that honed their stunt-like dance skills on the streets, New Alpha a.k.a Mystic – a 3 guy 1 girl group that isn’t afraid to use props or make-up and are masters at committing to their story, and Elite – an all girl group that blends their sensuality with their extraordinary talent and their ability to keep their formations tight.
Last week, the theme for the competition was Hip/Hop and African dancing. It was clear from the show that not everyone was familiar with the latter genre and in the end it boiled down to who invested more time in keeping it authentic. Heartless went home due to their inability to complete stunts cleanly during the Hip/Hop portion and their lack of research for the African portion.
The panel of judges shared their wisdom and very constructive criticism of the dancers and the dances themselves after each group performed. All in all the elimination was consistent with the criticisms laid out by the judges.
People really need to come out and support these young, talented and extremely creative people. The show was impressive and makes one care about the future of and the attitude towards the Arts in this country.
More competitions like this one are needed in the country that will not only show youth that there is money to be made in the Arts but to also showcase new and up and coming talent that may have otherwise given up their efforts due to a presumed lack of interest.
The competition will continue to be hosted at the Rush Night Club at 11pm until there is only one crew standing.
