Rendezvous Bay is a hidden paradise
The weather could not have been more perfect. The EAG's executive director Lia Nicholson arrived a little bit earlier to strategically place wayfinding signs to avoid folks getting lost in the hills. Everyone arrived in good time and ready to go.
This hike was a terrific mix of climbing, open areas, coastal scenery with rugged and sandy beaches. Some of the trail was very jungle-esque with steep climbs. Hikers passed by abandoned stone buildings that had been taken back by flora. A portion of the hike traveled along the 'road' that one could take by sport utility vehicle. But the road that may once allowed vehicles access to Rendezvous Bay, has gotten so brutal, only the most durable vehicle and patient driver would attempt such a feat.
Rendezvous Bay is a beautiful, pristine beach which sees very little traffic. By boat or by hiking are the main means of access. EAG board member Brian Cooper walked along the very long beach and returned with a report that sea turtle tracks were most definitely evident on the beach as Rendezvous is known to be an excellent nesting ground for turtles.
Upon arriving at Rendezvous Bay, the youngest and the four-legged hikers quickly took to the water to cool off after the first half of the hike. While adults explored tidal pools, the rocky coast, chatted and shared hiking stories, the littlest ones soaked and played in the turquoise waters.
The return trip was a bit more of a workout since the temperature of the day had risen more than a few degrees since they departed earlier in the morning. Everyone was sufficiently bathed in sweat when then arrived at the finish line.
Two participants who live at the beginning of the trail were generous enough to open their beautiful home to the hikers. They served juices, water and cookies to the little ones. A very hearty thank you to Stephan and Nano for your wonderful hospitality.
