The Unintended Writer: Floree Williams Pt.2
At just 25 years of age, Floree Williams has already published a book, Pink Teacups And Blue Dresses, and is about to release her second, Through The Window, at the close of this summer. This is the second part of a 2-part profile on the young author.
Though she now has two books under her belt, there were times that Floree Williams was unsure of herself. Being a patient of writer’s block, she credits the support from family and friends, like New York Times bestseller Eric Jerome Dickey, whom she meet and befriended at the 2007 Antigua and Barbuda International Literary Festival, for helping to encourage her to continue writing.
Through The Window is the story of 23-year-old Anya, a complex and often complicated woman who has to navigate through a maze of friendships, love, a dysfunctional family and finding love for herself. Anya's journey is one filled with drama, betrayal, tears, laughter and the strength/weaknesses of relationships.
When asked what advice she could give to other Antiguan writers who wanted to be published, Williams simply says, “Just try.” “The publishing industry is a difficult one to break into. Most publishing houses don’t even look at your manuscript, unless it comes from an agent, and living in Antigua, getting an overseas agent can be difficult. “
Williams is one of our very bright young Antiguan stars, and should be an inspiration to us all. It can take one simple event, to change your life’s course, for Floree it was her decision to take up writing. Her destiny you say? We eagerly await her new release this August.
Six Questions for Floree Williams:
Oprah or Nelson Mandela? Oprah, because I think she's superwoman and I wanna know how to be that.
What weird pet peeves do you have? I’m a bit of a germiphobe, so if I envision something I touched to be to contaminated I will pull out my hand sanitiser. I wanna pass out when I see people sneeze and then touch door handles and stuff! Does anyone else not notice this?
Name the body part that you love the most. My hands, I think they are pretty cute. I’m sure they can be used in a ring commercial.
If you could learn to play another instrument, what would it be, and why? I guess the piano, it’s a pretty mellow instrument. I dropped out when I was little when the going got tough. But I wouldn’t mind trying again.
Lauryn Hill or Sade? This is one of the hardest questions, man! But I'm going to have to pull with "Momma Sade" as I call her. There's always something in her songs that I feel is directly speaking to me.
If you could meet any one person before they die, who would it be, and why? Oddly enough, I would like to meet Janet Jackson. After her latest ABC interview I thought we had a lot in common and there are things we could talk about that I don’t think a lot of people would get.
