In a recent press release to the media, Antiguan students studying in Jamaica congratulated fellow student Argent Roberts on winning the Jamaican Avant Garde Fashion Design of the year award/competition as well as the Formal Avant Garde Design of the year award. Internationally, Argent has also been featured in the Saint International Avant Garde Designer of The Year and was regarded in the top three (3).

“We the Antiguan students here In Jamaica would like to inform and congratulate one of Antigua's very own Mr Argent Roberts on representing and winning on behalf of himself and the country. He has since starting his studies entered numerous international as well as regional competitions and has been very successful.” The release sated.

Argent took time away from his busy school schedule to answer a few of our questions.

365antigua.com: How do you feel about the great reception your original pieces have gotten so far?

Argent Roberts: I feel great about everyone's response to my sense of style especially the males because I wasn't accustomed to creating men's wear, and since I arrived in Jamaica the few pieces that I had done and wore/ showcased the men have been requesting it non-stop especially after I did Mission Catwalk.  Individuals from Canada and Italy and other international places kept calling me to request my clothing. I am humbled and truly grateful for everyone's response, it is amazing. Right now if I walk out on the street, the people see me, and recognise me right away based on the different sense of style that I have developed. The women are no different either they too respond just as well as the men.

365antigua.com: Describe your design style?

AR: My sense of style? how does one put that into words. I honestly think that my style is whatever you want it to be. For me personally I design with an aesthetic that is for women ethereal and avant garde with a hint of elegance and sincerity, and for the men I choose an aesthetic that is animated and avant garde. A lot of the designs that I create sardonically is inspired by my obsession with the other world and morbidity. I guess this is why most reference my work to Gareth Pugh and the Late Lee Alexander McQueen. But honestly my sense of style simply incorporates elements of avant garde and the ethereal realm as well as animated poeticism.

365antigua.com: I know there is still quite a bit of time left in your studies, but what are you plans after completing your degree?

AR: After graduating? I don't necessarily plan ahead like this but most definitely I will return home and do a lot of work in my country with my new skills and learnt techniques. I also will launch my official men's wear collection Skeleton Boi- Boi Interrupted (Junge Unterbrochen). However other than these things I really and honestly don't have any other plans but to just keep working and developing myself and sense of style.

Argent is presently a first year student at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica pursing a four-year degree in Textiles and Fibre Arts with a major in Fashion Design. He continues to enjoy practical work experience in Jamaica, having been booked to work as a set designer for four musical artistes on the island, in addition to preparing for other shows to showcase his designs.
