"When a Woman Moans": Encore

Marcella Andre onstage at the first performance of "When a Woman Moans" at the Multi-purpose Cultural and Exhibition Centre, May 29th.

It’s time to moan one more time. Women Of Antigua is happy to present the long awaited post-Carnival encore of When A Woman Moans. The production will take place at the Multi-purpose Cultural and Exhibition Centre, Perry Bay on Friday, August 13th at 8PM and Sunday, August 15th at 7PM.

When A Woman Moans was first staged in May 2010 and is a collection of monologues written by women in Antigua, inspired by the lives lived and lost by women in Antigua and Barbuda. In 2008 and 2009, Women Of Antigua assembled a cast of amazing everyday women living in Antigua to stage Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. After two successful years, the executive body decided it was time to stage a production that really spoke about the issues faced by women on the island.

Produced, edited and mainly written by August Rush Productions (Zahra Airall and Linisa George), the collection of work included pieces written by Marcella Andre, Joanne C. Hillhouse, Dotise Isaac-Gellizeau, Carel Hodge, Floree Williams, Melissa Elliott, and Greschen Edwards.

The production explores issues faced by women, from broken hearts and mourning the loss of loved ones to abusive relationships and death through domestic violence. But it also seeks to celebrate the triumphs and beauty of women as mothers, lovers, partners and if nothing else, just being a woman living in Wadadli.

The cast is once again ready to take their audience through a range of emotions from bouts of laughter with the confessions of an older woman rediscovering her body and love, to tears of sympathy when reflecting on the women who lost their lives to domestic violence in Antigua. The message at the end of the evening is clear: our women are one of our greatest assets who should be appreciated; and we can all play a role in bringing violence to an end on this island.

In May, the organisation and cast were successful in raising money to donate to local charities assisting women and children in abusive or abandoned situations.

The executive members of Women Of Antigua are Greschen Edwards, Linisa George, Zahra Airall and Thomasine Greenaway. For further information, call 783-4120, 779-6634 or 723-6934. Admission is only $30 at the door.  ** Please note, this is an adult production and children under the age of 16 will not be admitted.
