Happenings around our island
This past week in Antigua saw some intrepid hikers take a trip down to Soldier's Point at the southern end of Half Moon Bay. The EAG and Moments in Nature show us a relatively unexplored part of the east coast. Something else new under the sun is La Loupiote, a fascinating theatre on the water, where members perform acrobatic feats. Also in the "swing" of things are annual Black history month events, so get out and partake in the monthly activities, most of which are free to the public.
Then there's this little football game this Sunday called the Super Bowl you may have heard of. The 44th Super Bowl is the spectacle to end all spectacles. We all know by now that it's not about the game, it's about the gamesmanship. Despite the rest of the world facing an economic downturn, this mega event that lasts an entire day - once you factor in the pre-game hype, the pre-pre game hype, the post-game deliberations and the late-late show jokes - continues to defy financial expectations. Last year NBC banked a fifth of a BILLION dollars for the games' ad space and this year, CBS should easily top that.
But what does that mean for Antigua? Well, there's a lot of Americans living within our 365 beaches and their numbers are growing. Plus, they all have friends with big screen TV's. Okay, the last bit we're just guessing, but the popularity of American football is definitely on the rise, based on the number of Super Bowl parties being thrown around the island. Foredeck, the Coast Night Club, The Beach, Grand Bay Casino, Mad Mongoose, Dog Watch Tavern, Fort James Circle, and Free Spirits Pub are just some of the local joints hosting the game. Check out our calendar for your choice of Superbowl destinations. So this Sunday, order up your basket of buffalo wings, cheese pizzas and Budweiser, and join in the spectacle.
If athletics is more your style, the Antigua Hash House Harriers is hosting its 496th session at the WIOC and the ABCRA will be down at Pigeon Beach. And read the Wings Sports Club newsletter.
On the nightlife tip, Desert Island Disc's happening with DJ Alan Russell, DJ Offshore's spinning at Carmichael's, and Sunset Fiesta's at the Coast. And who knew we had a fraternity on the island as Psi Delta Epsilon hosts an 80's party at the Waterfront. Plus it's Passoa Fridays at Rush and Sushi Fridays at the Tides restaurant. Itchyfeet brings the tunes to the Mad Mongoose this weekend too. Oh, and all the single ladies...head on over to Ladies Night at Rush Nightclub. Then there's other continuing weeklies at Abra's (Live Acoustic Session) and Wine and Jazz at the Coast. Karaoke buffs shouldn't miss out on a chance to be Antigua's next superstar at the Coast.
Two reading clubs continue their good work at the Cushion Club and at Best of Books, Friar Hill Rd, Sallie Harker's art exhibit continues this week, and don't forget that both the Wadadli Youth Pen competition and the Zemi artefact exhibit at the national museum on Long Street close today.
Whew!
