Antigua athletes excel in Barbados Triathlon
On October 11th, three tri-athletes represented Antigua and Barbuda in Barbados at the Barbados National Triathlon and Caribbean Triathlon Union Championship. The tri-athletes’ Michael Rodrigues and Lindsay Duffy, of the Antigua and Barbuda Triathlon Association (ABTRI), and Tamiko Butler participated in the sprint distance event, which consists of a 750km (approx. 0.5mi) swim, 20km (12mi) bike race, and a 5k (3.2mi) run.
Tamiko Butler (shown, right) placed first in her age group 16-19 and second overall female tri-athlete with a finish time of 1:15:55.
Michael Rodrigues (shown, left) placed first in the Male 20-25 yrs age group, coming in at 1:27:06.
Lindsay Duffy (shown, center) placed first in the Female 40-44 yrs age group in 1:27:41.
Great Britain tri-athlete Dean Ratcliffe, while vacationing in Antigua, learned of the event and travelled with ABTRI to compete in Barbados. Dean, who recently represented Great Britain in the 2009 International Triathlon Union World Championship Series, competed in the Olympic distance, which consists of a 1.5km (1mi) swim, 40k (24mi) bike race, and 10km (6.4mi) run. He finished first in the male 40-44 yrs age group and fourth overall male with a time of 2:20:21.
LIAT is to be commended for waiving bike transportation fees to ABTRI members.
ABTRI will be holding try-a-tri, super sprint and a kiddies event on Sunday, November 15th at Fort James beach 2pm. All abilities are welcome.
On Sunday December 13th, the ABTRI will be hosting the full triathlon competition with both a Olympic and Sprint set of distances.
