Summer 2009, Time for the singles to mingle?

Much too often, we tend to smother the ones we admire...

Almost every summer, tons of us find ourselves trying to find some romance or at least something close to it. Unfortunately for the masses - which I am a part of - summer vacation comes, lasts for two months or so, leaves and we are still without someone to call our own. To the untrained mind, we are desperate, too picky or downright pathetic; we know better however; at least I hope we do. So, what is the problem? Who knows? This summer, I have a plan; for those of you who want to find a significant other that is, because I totally don’t.

First step, stop looking! Summer vacation is the student's little bit of heaven – especially if they are spending it in the tropics. Why waste all your time and energy trying to find treasure that is not yet yours? What I am trying to say is that everything in life takes time. Sure, I understand that you have had a crush on Marcus/ Denesha (lol) for three long years and he just happens to be single this time around but if he/she is interested in you, let them come to you. Much too often, we tend to smother the ones we admire to the point that we appear creepy – for lack of a better adjective. It’s true! Just ask your best friend; they are the ones who endure our constant babble about the girl/guy that we are “obsessed” with; right Kim?

So what happens if this dream guy/gal does not come to you? Simple; LET IT GO! Again, summer vacation only comes around once every year; make the best of each waking moment. Hang out with your friends, meet new people; have fun for crying out loud! Can’t have fun because you’re too heartbroken right? Oh please! There are much bigger issues; like global warming! The number one rule of having fun is ; never make excuses for not wanting to have fun. Regardless of the situation, there has to be a little spark of fun to be had. Your job is to make a fire out of that one little spark.

If you’re one of the lucky ones and Marcus/Denesha comes around, good for you! Be sure to never make them the centre of your world though. Summer vacation is your time to relax and unwind, so unless they are planning to get some R&R with you, as opposed to getting it at your expense, there will be a problem. Sometimes we like someone for so long but when we get to know them, the feeling fades. Such is life, things happen; Move on! The last thing you want to do is spend your time feeling depressed; we already have school for that.

At the end of Summer 2009, some will find love in long-time crushes, others in new people and there will definitely be some of us who are still single. I think the single ones get to have more fun since they get to relive the “quest”. Whatever your desires, whatever the outcome, go out there and make this summer the best summer of your life!

Perhaps it’s still too soon to mention, but in light of all that has happened, I still find myself, in the lull of the summer months, yearning for one more Stanford 20/20 event in Antigua.
